In a recent interview at D23 by the Mirror, Tetsuya Nomura had a lot to say on the present and future of Kingdom Hearts. Of course, the focus was Kingdom Hearts 3, but it looks like that there is more story to tell.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is set to end the current run of story, which is known as the Xehanort Saga. However, interviewer Ryan Brown brought up the question of what might occur after. Nomura replied with the following:
Of course there are different plans that are in my mind and things that I would like to work on or depict in terms of narrative, but it’s not like we have anything finalized with Disney as of yet, so I’m not able to introduce it or mention it at this time, but again, I do have different ideas in my head.
This brings up the question, would players still play a game with Sora after the events of the main saga close? Are there other threats? What if we had a new protagonist? These are all things that only Nomura knows himself. It is interesting to imagine what they might do in a few years after the release of Kingdom Hearts 3.
Fans were treated to the announcement of a release window and a brand new trailer, depicting the new Toy Story world from Pixar at the recent D23 expo. They will be able to explore the new area themselves when Kingdom Hearts 3 releases in 2018.
