Shadow of the Colossus originally released for PlayStation 2 back in October 2005 in the US and Japan, though it didn’t come until a few months later in February 2006 in Europe. This put the release of the new Shadow of the Colossus remake for PS4 just about 12 years after the original and it managed to sell even better than its predecessor.
According to UK gaming and entertainment site Ukie, Shadow of the Colossus for PS4 came in at #1 on the weekly sales chart for the week of its release, followed directly by EA Sports UFC 3, Monster Hunter World, FIFA 18, and Grand Theft Auto 5.
This is obviously a big win for Sony to have yet another exclusive doing this well at launch in the UK, especially when it’s a remake versus a brand new game. This is the 8th different Sony exclusive to reach the spot over the last year as well.
Comparing this remake for PS4 to the original’s launch numbers, this version launched with 73% higher sales numbers than the PS2 original. Shadow of the Colossus is a lot more well known now though than Ico was, which was the only game that people had to base any Shadow of the Colossus hype on when it originally released. By now, we’ve had not only Shadow of the Colossus on PS2, but also Ico and The Last Guardian as well.
It will definitely be interesting to see how the remake ends up placing in the monthly NPDs for the US when we get those next month for comparison purposes.
